Karin Elgin-Nijhuis specializes in communication and content strategy for (heritage) tourism destinations and organisations.
Having read Ancient History at Utrecht University (Netherlands) she remained for several years combining roles at the university with work in tourism. Fascinated by the opportunities the internet offered tourism organisations, she trained as an Internet Developer and Adviser, followed post-graduate courses in Information Strategy and E-commerce, and is currently finalising an Executive Masters in Corporate Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
Karin fulfilled roles such as Head of Consultancy and Projects of the Information and Media Services Department of the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Congresses (NBTC Holland Marketing). She has been in consultancy since 2004.
She enjoyed researching and writing the UNWTO publication Evaluating and Improving Websites – The Destination Web Watch (2005), and the UNWTO and ETC Handbook on E-marketing for Tourism Destinations (2008 and the fully revised and extended 2014 edition) together with colleagues from TEAM Tourism Consulting.
As manager of Elgin & Co., Karin co-founded and organizes the Heritage, Tourism and Hospitality, International Conference (HTHIC), and the Tourism StoryLAB® which is dedicated to the exchange and development of knowledge about storytelling and narrative techniques.
