The current two terms Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES), of Addis Ababa University (Ehtiopia), Dr. Ahmed Hassen holds B.A. (Addis Ababa University, 1987), M.A. (Addis Ababa University, 1994), DEA (Université de Provence, Aix-Marseille I, 2001) and PhD (Université Paris I Pantheon Sorbonne2007). Dr. Ahmed has been assigned by Addis Ababa University to teach several undergraduate courses between 1994 and 1999. He had left the university for Europe and academically trained in France. Since 2011, he is conducting research at IES and teaches graduate courses at the university. He has also published several articles in scientific journals such as the prestigious Journal of Ethiopian Studies and the highly cited prestigious French Journal: Annales d’Éthiopie, book chapters and translated one book from French into Amharic and co-edited the proceedings of the 17th International Conference of Ethiopian studies (Held in Akaki Ethiopia 2009) in 2015 and the Proceedings of the 18th International Conferences of Ethiopian Studies (Held in Dirre Dewa Ethiopia 2012) in 2016. Before being appointed Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies of Addis Ababa University in 2012, he had been program coordinator of Post Graduate Studies in the same Institute. He currently engaged in research and teaching as well as collaborating with several centers of African Studies in USA, Europe and Asia. Dr. Ahmed is awarded a Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of Education (February 2016); and, the Distinguished Research Award by Addis Ababa University (May 2017). Fluent speaker of both English and French as well as local Ethiopian languages, Dr. Ahmed is one of the Addis Ababa University’s rare scholars carefully mastering both historical and contemporary issues of Africa and above all on Ethiopia and the Horn.
